Tropical diseases are very common in Costa Rica and some can be prevented with some very crucial steps. If a patient comes into the emergency room here in Costa Rica or in the United States with the presence of a rash and a high fever, there are many possibilities for diagnosis. A big question to ask is if the patient has been around still water or places with lots of breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are a common vector for several tropical diseases that present with a rash and can help to narrow down the possibilities. With this disease, a big issue to look out for is excessive bleeding as the virus is known to destroy the platelets and develop hemorrhagic fever. There is essentially no treatment for this disease except Tylenol for comfort and watching the complete blood count of the patient. Feel free to comment below what you think the disease is that the patient is presenting with and I will update next time with the correct answer! Buena Suerte!
