The patient that presented to the hospital with a slow healing bite combined with symptoms of irritability at the site is presenting with suspected Rabies. If the animal can be located, the animal can be observed for the rabies symptoms for 10 days, if the animal shows no symptoms the rabies shots are not needed. If the animal in question does exhibit symptoms of rabies the patient should receive the rabies shot as soon as possible like the rabies immune globulin shot to prevent the virus from infecting the patient. The site of the injection depends on the site of the bite itself and must be given near the site of the bite.
