The "Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social" or the Costa Rican Social Security Fund administers the public health care to the citizens and legal residents of Costa Rica. Individuals who are employees of a company in Costa Rica will have their public health insurance provided to them through their work. Those who are self employed will pay for their own insurance which is called “asegurado voluntario." The amount that everyone pays for health insurance will vary as it is based on the individual's income and will be determined by the sliding scale below.

The scale is created and enforced by the CAJA for the residents of Costa Rica.
